This is an invaluable and informative study for anyone interested in corruption issues and anti-corruption policies, not only in China but applicable elsewhere. The book is the first-ever work offering quantitative and qualitative analyses of the manifestation and determinants of corruption throughout China between 1979 and 2012. Among other observations, the evolutionary process in the nature and forms of corruption are closely related to changes in the Chinese government's economic and fiscal policies. Comprehensive in scope, the book can be used as a reference work while parts of it read like a novel as the author illustrates types of corruption with typical cases. Covering all 31 provinces of China, the study is based on years of personal painstaking research by the author to gather 33 years' worth of data, from Procuratorate Year Books and Working Reports, as well as other official announcements and proclamations by the central government agencies. The book clearly identifies three stages of social, economic, and political evolution, as well as three stages of corruption, each having identifiable patterns with different dominant corruption types and law enforcement anti-corruption effects.
