The Secret Rapture, perhaps Hare's most acclaimed work, is centered around the relationship between two sisters and their father's dissolute girlfriend in the wake of the father's death. As the estate is settled and a variety of characters is introduced, Hare deftly mines the links between the public and private spheres of life, and simultaneously indicts a conservative government and the wild caprice of his characters.
